MAXFIELD, Charles E. age 96 of Hamilton passed away Saturday Oct. 22, 2016 in the Westover Retirement Community. He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on July 20, 1920 the son of Arthur J. and Marie Antoinette (Boisvert) Maxfield. On June 7, 1945 in Besancon France he married Mildred C. Shafer (Mickie) and she preceded him in death on September 21, 2009. Mr. Maxfield was a member of St. Peter in Chains Church.
Charles served in the army during WWII first as commander of an antiaircraft battery and then as a field transportation officer. He served in North Africa, Italy and Europe, receiving 2 battle stars. As a career army officer he, also, served in the Korean war and in several U.S. based posts achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. As a civilian for the navy he served in the Vietnam war as a liason and advisor. Charles was an avid ornithologist an Eagle Scout and an accomplished harmonica player. At Westover "Charlie" was a friend to all, served as president of the Resident's Council and his jokes were the highlight of the exercise classes.
Charles is the oldest of fifteen children and is survived by 7 of his siblings. He is survived by his four children, Chuck, his wife Sharon; Russell, his wife Ruth; Paul; and Michael, his wife Lawrie; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Eric, Sean, Kristin, Kevin, Latima, Justin, Aurora and Gavin; twenty great-grandchildren Hillary, Whitney, Tyler, Bodhi, Katie, Lillian, Marcus, Sarah, Lucas, Aiden, Annamaria, Brenden, Ellie, Mildred, Daphne, Matthias, Martha, Evelyn, Rowyn and Veronica; and one great-great grandchild Gabriel. He is predeceased by his three grandchildren, Daniel, Gabriel, Russell II, and nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Prayers will be offered at 9:30AM Wednesday in the Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM Wednesday in St. Peter in Chains Church with Fr. Rob Muhlenkamp celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Colonial Foundation 230 Ludlow Street Hamilton, Ohio 45011 with Notation "In memory of Charles Maxfield for the benefit of Westover".
