He worked on his parents' 142-acre farm, most of which constitutes Harbin Park today, as a boy, and walked a mile and a half to Resor School and back every day. He remembered having to carry buckets of coal up from the basement to heat the old building while he was a student there.
He graduated from Fairfield Township High school in 1934. He worked for a time for neighbor and friend George Adam "Bud" Rentschler, Jr., and married Margaret Napier on Nov. 24, 1937 and she preceded him in death in 1978. -He went to work for Rentschler's General Machinery Corp., predecessor to Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, that same year as a machinist apprentice. After excelling as a machinist, he was eventually promoted to a position as quality control supervisor.
He worked as a diesel engine technician and quality control specialist for the U.S. Navy in Recife, Brazil; on Adak, an island in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, and also in Panama City, Panama, during World War II. Although still technically a civilian, he was accorded the rank of lieutenant. He returned to his old position with the company when the war ended, and was transferred to Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton's plant in Eddystone. Pa., near Philadelphia. in 1961. He lived in nearby Aldan, Pa., until he returned to Hamilton and took a position as quality control supervisor for Mosler Safe Co. in 1963. He retired from the company in 1981.
He was active as a historical researcher and genealogist in his retirement, and has contributed much to the knowledge of the history of Fairfield and Hamilton.
