Obituary

FUNSTON, Earl S. age 92, died on August 14, 2012, ten months after the death of his beloved wife of 66 years. Earl was born on January 18, 1920, to Jesse and Nina Funston of Lovington, Illinois. Earl grew up on a farm and worked alongside his father until he left farming to study chemical engineering. Earl married his hometown sweetheart, Carol J. Johnson, in 1945. Earl received his BS degree from the University of Eastern Illinois.

Earl would tell you that he lived an interesting life. Earl briefly taught high school chemistry, physics, and math in Litchfield, Michigan before he was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, TN as a metallurgist. After WWII, Earl moved to Cincinnati, OH where he worked for General Electric. There Earl was given the opportunity to work on several projects that presented him with a rewarding career. Earl worked on the power systems for the Pioneer Satellites used for space exploration, the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package built for lunar exploration, and the US Air Force proposed long range nuclear aircraft. Acquiring thirteen patents along the way, Earl often said he was lucky to work during a time when science gripped the imaginations of inventors.

Upon retiring from General Electric in 1970, Earl and his wife Carol founded Carland Realty. In 1992, he sold Carland Realty to find time for him and Carol to travel.

Earl leaves behind three children, Jesse Keith (Kathy) Funston, Sandra Funston (Dan) Wiegand, and Beth Funston. He has five grandchildren, Jason (Kristin) Wiegand, Nancy Wiegand (Nick) Dadas, Kylee Wiegand (Andrew) Thiel, Jesse Funston, and Michael Funston; and one great-grandchild, Carter Patrick Wiegand.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family followed by burial in Millville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Melanoma Know More, P.O.
