Obituary

Henry H. Dean, Jr., affectionately known as Hank, passed away on February 14, 2026, in Monroe, Ohio. He was born on August 6, 1927 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Hank graduated from Connecticut Wesleyan in 1949 with a degree in psychology. He married Caroline Bruner on February 3, 1951 and later earned a Master's Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Hank's career was distinguished, working in Winona, MN, several years at Yale University in New Haven, CT, and finally at Ohio University in Athens, OH until his retirement. Ohio University honored his long tenure as the Director of Residence Halls Housekeeping by naming a training room after him.

Hank's hobbies were deeply rooted in his love for music, particularly Barbershop Quartet singing. He was an active member of a group in Connecticut that participated in competitive singing. He directed a SPEBSQSA men's chorus in Marietta, Ohio for nearly 20 years and later directed the Sweet Adelines chapter in Athens, Ohio. Hank and Cary enjoyed golf and were long-time members of the Athens Country Club and the Gananoque Golf & Country Club.

Hank served in the US Navy during World War II and the US Air Force during the Korean conflict. He and Cary were members of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard in Athens, OH, until they relocated to the Cincinnati area in 1998. Hank was known for his handlebar moustache (which became his trademark at Ohio University) and his widely appreciated sense of humor.

After retiring, Hank was a volunteer golf teacher for about 20 years in Gananoque, Ontario, where Hank and Cary spent their summers. They traveled extensively with their van and travel trailer, visiting many states, including Alaska, as well as Canada, and spending time with family and friends.

Hank was a devoted family man. He is survived by his brother Oliver, children Ken (& Karen), Leslie (& Curt), Howie (& Charlotte), and Marty (& Kenny), 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by Cary, who passed away in November 2024.

May Hank's memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be forwarded to the Hank and Cary Dean Memorial Fund c/o Gananoque Golf and Country Club, 211 Golf Club Lane, Gananoque, Ontario, Canada K7GQV5. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 24 at the Dean/Bruner family cottage in Gananoque.
