NOLAN, James J., age 90 passed away on Monday, February 20 at Ft. Hamilton Hospital. He was born on April 10, 1915 in Wilkes-Barre, PA the son of James and Catherine (Helfrich) Nolan. He graduated from St. Mary High School then worked in automotive parts management until his entrance to the US Army in September, 1942 rising to the rank of captain. In WW II he served as commanding officer of the 3456th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company consisting of 129 enlisted men and three officers. He participated in the invasion of Normandy then organized and supervised maintenance garages and supply depots in France, Belgium, and Germany. His harrowing experiences behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge tested his mettle and made for exciting stories for his children and grandchildren. He was honorably discharged in March, 1946 having earned numerous letters of commendation. He shortly married Anne D. Gleason who preceded him in death in 1992. His civilian career included twenty-one years with General Motors, Oldsmobile Division, most notably as western states regional manager in Denver, CO; insurance and real estate sales; and ownership of an automobile dealership. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and Butler County Senior Citizens Center where he gained a reputation as a fine dancer and raconteur. Survivors include two sons, James A. of Madison, WI, and Frank A. of Eureka, WA; three daughters, Maude (Joe) Nagle of Hamilton, Kate (Jay) Singstock of Racine, WI, and Rose (Peter) Stark of Ashville, NY; six grandchildren Jaye, Dustin, Anne, Hilary, Adam, and Lance; two great-grandchildren, Breanna and Mia; and special friends Helen Ledford and Leia West. Visitation will take place at Sacred Heart Church, 400 Nilles Road, Fairfield, on Friday, February 24 beginning at 9:30 a.m. immediately followed by Eucharistic liturgy at 10:00 a.m. Interment of ashes will occur in Pennsylvania.
