James Louis "Jim" Spurlock, 71, passed away at Hospice of Hamilton on May 5, 2024 following a four year battle with cancer.  Born on September 25, 1952 in Hamilton, Ohio, Jim was the oldest of three children of Conway James and Mary Louise (Kupper) Spurlock.  He grew up in Lindenwald and attended Garfield High School where he studied industrial arts and welding.  A man of strong work ethic, Jim took pride in his professional careers.  After first working for his father at Overhead Door Company of Cincinnati, he moved on to work as a telephone installer/repairman for United Telephone Services in Lebanon, Ohio.  On September 24, 1983, he was united in marriage with Stephanie Staigl, a marriage that lasted for the next forty years until his death.  The couple had one child, Brad, born in 1991.  Jim realized his lifelong dream of joining the Hamilton Fire Department in 1983.  He served as a firefighter/EMT for nearly twenty years and was proud to have helped train Hamilton's first 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers.  His service was cut short when he was injured in a training accident in 2002.  In his retirement, Jim volunteered as an assistant scoutmaster, was a long-time usher at St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church, and earned his amateur radio operator license.  In addition to his family, Jim loved all things related to firefighting and food.  He spent a lot of his time cooking while listening to his ever present police scanners or watching old TV westerns.  He took exceptionally good care of his family, who greatly miss him, and wanted nothing more than to be helpful to all he encountered. Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and IAFF Local 20.

Jim is survived by his wife Stephanie Spurlock; son, Brad (Hannah) Spurlock; and grandchildren, Howie and Rory Spurlock, all of Hamilton; in addition to his mother, Mary Louise Spurlock, of Fairfield; siblings Brenda (Ed) Bley, of Fairfield and Scott (Tari) Spurlock; sister-in-law Chris Staigl and adopted sister-in-law Rebecca Young, of Castalian Springs, Tennessee; brother-in-law Robert Loos of Hamilton; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and brother and sister firefighters.  Jim was preceded in death by his father, Jim Spurlock, in 2022 and sister-in-law, Carol Loos, in 2020.

The family would like to extend a thank you to Fr. Larry Tharp; Dr. Scott Kotzin; the staff of Fort Hamilton Hospital, Mercy Hospital Fairfield, and Hospice of Hamilton; and all friends and family who have expressed their support at this difficult time.

Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30am  on Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 400 Nilles Road, Fairfield, Ohio.  Donations can be made in his memory to Sacred Heart St. Vincent De Paul.
