Obituary

Jay Gary Needleman, 75, passed away on December 21, 2025, surrounded by love. After facing significant health challenges over the past several years, Jay remained a fighter until the very end, meeting those struggles with strength and quiet resolve.

Born on February 28, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, Jay grew up in Far Rockaway, where his lifelong curiosity and spirit of adventure began. At the age of 13, he taught himself to scuba dive in the waters off New York, a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. As an adult, he made his home in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jay completed well over 5,000 scuba dives and became a rescue diver and certified instructor, teaching hundreds, perhaps thousands of people to dive safely and confidently. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and studied Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York. From a young age, Jay ran his own automotive engineering business and was widely known for his mechanical expertise, with few things he could not fix. He proudly passed these skills on to his sons and any others who wanted to learn.

A teacher at heart, Jay spent his life helping others and sharing his knowledge through scuba instruction, auto mechanics, firearm safety and marksmanship, woodworking, and mentorship. He believed deeply in integrity, self-reliance, and doing the right thing, even when it was difficult.

Jay served Troop 940 for many years as an Assistant Scoutmaster and was a steady, welcoming presence within the troop. He was instrumental in developing the troop's shooting program, establishing procedures and traditions that continue today. Three of his four sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout, including his son Scott, Troop 940's 66th Eagle Scout, an achievement that reflected Jay's dedication as both a leader and a father.

Known for his sharp wit, dry sarcasm, and remarkable memory, Jay was a natural storyteller with a deep knowledge of history and the world around him. He was also a devoted animal lover, caring for many pets throughout his life, each of which held a special place in his heart.

Jay is survived by his partner of 19 years, Tracie M. Braun (Gaydosh); his children, Scott Needleman (Christina), Jeremiah Shepherd (Annalee, grandchildren Abraham and Miriam), Isaac Shepherd (Madison Hibbard), and Steven Braun (Madeline Fry); his sister, Susan Maxwell (Bill); and his niece, Samantha Roberts (Jamie, great-nephew, Noah).

Jay will be remembered as a teacher at heart, one whose lessons extended far beyond classrooms and campsites, and whose impact will be felt for generations.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 10th, 2026 at the Braun/Needleman Residence at 5587 Chesapeake Way, Fairfield, OH. Calling hours will be from 1-4 pm with a brief remembrance service at 4:00, with dinner to follow.
