Comella
September 5, 1939 – September 16, 2025
John S. Comella, age 86, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at his home in
Fairfield, OH after a brief illness. John was born in Cleveland, OH on September 5,
1939 to John J. and Betty (Piro) Comella. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church
in Fairfield. John grew up in Cleveland where he attended St. Joseph's High School, graduating in
1957. He obtained a business degree from the University of Dayton in 1961 before
joining the Navy that same year. He served as an officer on the USS Tulare and later
the USS Rupertus. He retired from the Navy in 1965, returning to Ohio. He married his
wife of nearly 60 years, Marion (nee Froehlich) on November 25, 1965.
John attended Cleveland State University's Marshall College of Law. He graduated from
there in 1975. He worked as an attorney for the government for over 20 years.
Throughout his life, starting at age 14 when he built his first radio in his parents'
basement, John was an avid amateur (ham) radio operator. He won numerous contests
and awards, first operating as W8QXQ and later as N8AA. He participated in two DX
expeditions: one to the Grand Cayman Islands in 1977 and the other to St. Paul Island
off the coast of Nova Scotia in 2016.
John is survived by his wife, Marion; their six children, Michelle Comella, Anne Marie
(Fred) Warren, Maureen Comella, John J. (Julie) Comella, Sebastian (Lisa) Romella,
and Marianne (Jeff) Kerrigan; and three grandchildren, Gabrielle Warren, Sam Warren,
and Alexis Comella.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Young, and
brother, Anthony Comella.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am Tuesday, September
23, 2025 at Sacred Heart Church, 400 Nilles Rd. Fairfield, OH 45014. Following the
Mass, the inurnment will take place at Mount Olivet - Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery, 400
S. Locus St, Oxford, OH 45056. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that
you consider making a donation to the charity of your choice. Online register book
