Obituary

Kevin Patrick McCaughey, 70, of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by family who held his hand and shared stories until the end.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on August 20, 1955, to Elaine & William McCaughey; he was the third of their fourteen children. He was a graduate of Badin High School and held a Bachelor of Arts in English from Miami University.

True to his Irish nature, he fought his illness with strength, humor and courage.

The day before his death, Kevin was able to share stories, prayers and laughter with a room full of family and several others on a Zoom call. How appropriate, Kevin would "hold court" at his own Irish Wake.

Kevin was a man blessed with many passions that he willingly shared with family and friends.

His enormous library was evidence of his love of books. Kevin's passion for history was shown in his ability to speak at length about the presidents and the Founding Fathers. He also served as the family historian, telling tales of family lore.

Given his special fondness and appreciation for music and the arts, he happily introduced many to jazz, blues, classical, theatre, architecture and the timeless popular classics.

He was filled with wanderlust, loving to travel and reveling in the details of others' vacations, especially those connected to his family roots in his beloved New England.

Kevin was quite an accomplished swimmer.  He routinely swam a mile a day at the YMCA until shortly before his death. He was also known to send a thank you or congratulations on one of his many vintage postcards.

Above all, he was a kind soul with a huge heart! He was particularly devoted to his many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Elaine (McKinnon) and William McCaughey and his brother-in-law, David Dejohn. He is survived by his siblings: William (Marcia), Mike (Becky), Elaine Dejohn, John (Kym), Kate (Scott) Henry, Dan (Lynne), Patty (Bryan) Barlow, Joe (Lisa), Sarah (Joe) Menzer, Sheila (Greg) Bowen, Mark, Ann and Vinny; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Kevin's sister, Ann, and nieces, Bridget Henry and Molly Corum, for their extreme dedication and tender care during his illness.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Kevin's life on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St. Peter in Chains, Hamilton, OH. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am, with the Funeral Mass at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at St. Stephen Cemetery. A Celebration of Life gathering will immediately follow the burial at Basil 1791 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm for all who wish to share memories and stories.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the William and Elaine McCaughey Memorial Scholarship Fund at Badin High School.
