TALLEN, Mary Helen age 88, of Hamilton, Ohio passed away in Bloomington, Illinois on Sunday, June 5, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 4, 1927, Mary was the daughter of Albert and Helen (Pechiney) Squires. She worked throughout high school as a checker at Albers supermarket, graduating Mother of Mercy High School in 1946. She went on to attend Secretarial School and later worked for the Crane Company where she met her husband John P. Tallen. She and John married in 1950; her loving husband preceded her in death in 1999.
A spirited woman and stylish homemaker, Mary's greatest love and challenge was raising her two sons, Terry and Jay. She was particularly proud that both sons were accomplished at football earning athletic scholarships: Terry at Indiana University and Jay at Ball State. She was an avid sports fan, cheering actively for the teams her sons' and grandchildren played for or whichever team she perceived as the underdog. An avid Bridge player, she played in several clubs with beloved friends for over 50 years.
Mary was a leader in Hamilton Catholic Community, active in many charitable organizations including the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae and Catholic Women in Action.
She is survived by her two sons, Terrence "Terry" Tallen of San Diego, California. Terry is engaged to be married to Diane Kohler of Cardiff by the Sea, CA. Jay P. Tallen of Bloomington, Illinois; daughter in law Leslie Tallen and three grandchildren, Benjamin, Kathleen and Samuel Tallen; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear, loyal friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings Albert Squires and Katherine (Squires) Mersch.
Prayers will be offered at 9:30am Thursday in the Zettler Funeral Home 2646 Pleasant Ave. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am Thursday in Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Larry Tharp celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Online register book available at www.zettlerfuneralhome.com
