TOERNER, Mary M. (Romes), 91, of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020, surrounded by loved ones. Mary was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 5, 1929, to the late Edward and Caroline Romes.
Mary graduated from Regina High School in 1947 and attended business school at the University of Cincinnati. While working at AMSCO in Cincinnati, she met the love of her life, Thomas Toerner. The two married in 1952 and made their home in Hamilton, where they raised their family until moving to The Woodlands in 1982.
Mary loved her family and found great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a natural at rocking babies, and after moving to Texas she was employed at The Woodlands Methodist Church nursery, where she worked into her eighties.
Her love of reading and her gift for organizing led her to help set up the Queen of Peace School library, where she served as librarian for many years.
Mary also had a love for travel and accomplished her goal of visiting every state in the country. She enjoyed planning family vacations and gathering everyone together. She also loved playing cards, especially bridge and pitch, and was known to visit a casino or two.
Mary was loving, kind, generous and welcoming. All who knew her will miss her laughter, quick wit and smile.
Mary is survived by her husband of 68 years, Thomas; children Jane Toerner-Brown (Lawrence), Martha Lopinto (Michael), Elizabeth Tassone (Donald), Thomas, Jr., (Pamela), Terri Barbush (Thomas) and Edward J. (Theresa). She also is survived16 grandchildren: Meredith Brown, Lee (Jen) Brown, Caroline (Pat) Ward, Joe Lopinto (Michelle), Matt Lopinto (Lindsay), Ann (Tim) Poirier, Patrick (Megan) Tassone, Mary (Jon) Virgi, Chris (Lindsey) Tassone; Amanda (David) Saliba, Nancy Toerner, Maggie Toerner, Stephen Barbush, Rob Barbush, Hannah Toerner and Dan Toerner, 16 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Ann Toerner-Rich and Kathy (John) Kennedy; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by two children, Nancy and Stephen; parents, Edward and Caroline Romes; siblings Mildred Romes, Florence Romes, Elmer (Ethel) Romes and Rita (Edward) Gropp; mother-in-law, Magdalene Toerner; and in-laws Paul (Mary Ellen) Toerner and Dick Rich.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 11:00 AM at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 2550 Millville Ave, Hamilton, Ohio followed by burial in St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be from at 10:00-11:00AM in the church.
