MAXFIELD, Mildred C. age 90 of Hamilton died Monday, September 21, 2009, at Hospice of Hamilton. She was born in Denver, Colorado on November 1, 1918, the daughter of Peter A. and Myrtle (Foss) Shafer. On June 7, 1945, in Besancon, France she married Charles E. Maxfield.
Mildred grew up on the family farm in Oregon along with her twelve siblings. After completing Nursing School she entered World War II as an Army nurse and took part in the invasions of North Africa and Southern France. She was also present at the famous "Battle of the Bulge" in Belgium. While stationed in North Africa, she met the love of her life Lt. Col. Charles Maxfield, to whom she was married for 64 years.
Mildred is survived by her husband Charles, their four children Chuck, Russell, Paul and Michael, nine grandchildren Michelle, Eric, Sean, Kristin, Kevin, Latima, Justin, Aurora and Gavin, fourteen great-grandchildren Hillary, Whitney, Tyler, Bodhi, Katie, Lillian, Marcus, Sarah, Lucas, Aiden, Annamaria, Brenden, Ellie and Mildred.
She is predeceased by her grandchildren Daniel, Gabriel and Russell II, and her great-grandchildren Emma, Francis, William, Claire, Mary and Charles. We will miss her dearly.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am Saturday in St. Peter in Chains Church with Father Timothy Bunch celebrant. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Friday in Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave. Burial will be Monday at 1:00pm in Dayton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Colonial Foundation 520 Eaton Avenue Hamilton, Ohio 45013 with Notation "In memory of Mildred Maxfield for the benefit of Westover".
