Obituary

PFIRRMAN, Nancy Ann age 72 of Hamilton passed away on Monday, January 8, 2017, at Westover Retirement Village. She was born on January 5, 1946, in Mercy Hospital, Hamilton, the daughter of George L. "Pete" and Dorothy M. (Kollstedt) Pfirrman. Nancy attended Pierce Elementary, St. Ann School, and Notre Dame High School, graduating in 1964. She majored in French at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio where she joined the French honorary Pi Delta Phi, holding the office of Vice-President during her Junior year. After having received her AB degree in 1968, she spent two years in graduate school at Miami, during which time she held an assistantship doing research for Professor Stanford Luce on a dictionary of French slang. Her second year of grad school consisted of completing her advanced course work and writing her Master's thesis entitled "The Syntax of the Heptameron by Marguerite de Navarre." At the 1970, Miami commencement ceremony, Nancy received her Master's degree with the other graduate school candidates from guest speaker Neil Armstrong. In the fall of 1970, Nancy began her teaching career at Badin High School in Hamilton, Ohio. While teaching French there she completed enough courses at Xavier University, Cincinnati, and Miami University Oxford to become certified by the State of Ohio to teach German as well as French. Taking advantage of summers off from teaching, Nancy traveled with family and friends on vacations in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. The destinations expanded to Europe where she could practice her languages and experience first hand the customs and cultures of the people. On three of the tours she accompanied group of students. Interested in family genealogy, Nancy's search for nearest relatives still in Europe became fruitful when she contacted and later visited those in Germany and France. But her most rewarding trip was in 1994, when she accompanied her parents to Switzerland and France. In Normandy, her father was honored in a 50th anniversary ceremony for veterans of the D-Day invasion. During her 28 years at Badin High School, "Miss Pfirrman" helped out with school musicals and variety shows. In the mid 80's, she was instrumental in forming and running the school's first recycling program. She was also chairman of the Foreign Language Department for 22 years and moderated the French and German Clubs. Her professional organizations included the American Association of Teachers of French and the Ohio Foreign Language Teacher Association. A lifetime member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Hamilton, Nancy was also a member of the choir and of the Rosary Society. She was strong in her faith and a firm believer in the power of prayer and Divine Intervention. In 1986, Nancy and a group of other polio survivors in Cincinnati founded a support group in the wake of media reports of Post-Polio Syndrome, symptoms of which include new pain and muscle weakness. She served on its board for many years. (Nancy had contracted polio at the age of 3 during the epidemic of 1949.) Little did she know that another member of the Polio Connection would become a great friend, and in time, her fiancé and dear husband. On November 4, 2000, Nancy and Dean Peters of Oxford were married at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hamilton. They loving enjoyed 17 years of marriage, sharing hobbies of gardening and visiting regional covered bridges.
