DOWNIE, Robert L. Jr., age 84 of Fairfield, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 in Tri-county Extended Care Center. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio on July 9, 1923 the son of Robert and Anna (Schuh) Downie Sr. and was a 1941 graduate of Hamilton Catholic High School. He attended Concord College in Athens West Virginia, and served in the US Army, during WWII, was wounded in Bonarue, Belgium, receiving the Purple Heart. On May 22, 1945, in St. Ann Church he married Lucille Dungan and she preceded him in death on May 9, 1992. Robert retired as supervisor of the US Postal service, Rossville Station, after twenty-five years service. An avid bowler, he served on the board of the Greater Hamilton Bowling Association, for many years and enjoyed working at the annual tournament.

Survivors include five children, Judith Kraft (Ken), of Glendale, Lois Jean Rhoten (Charles), of Fairfield TWP, James Downie (Ruby), of Hamilton, Mary Jane Downie, of Centerville, and Joan Staarmann, of Cincinnati, nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Downie(Sandy); brother-in-law, Andy Dungan.

Besides his wife; he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Rita Scarce, Mary Ann Weaver, and Agnes Baldwin; two brothers, Karl and William Downie.

Prayers will be offered at 9:30am Friday in the Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am Friday in St. Ann Church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30am-9:30am Friday in the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Rita's School for the Deaf, 1720 Glendale-Milford Rd.
