SCHAWANN, Robert J. "Bob", formerly of Hamilton, resident of Mason Christian Village Retirement Community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at age 97. He was born on September 9, 1915, in Hamilton, the son of Lawrence and Carrie Jacobs Schawann. He was a 1934 graduate of Hamilton High School and a proud Veteran of WWII, serving as a member of the Army Air Corp, 66th Squadron(1943-1945) which landed on Normandy Beach the second day of the invasion. On June 27, 1953, he married Ruth Baum, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Bob was employed by Merchants Paper Co., Forney Corporation, and Tragessor Ford.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, his daughter and her family, Connie and Scott Lindsay, and their children Bryce and Sara; a son, Rob Schawann; a granddaughter, Niki Fox and her children, McKenzie and Kylie Baumgardner; a nephew, Dr. Larry (Linda) Baum, and niece Cheryl (Greg) Poe and their families.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Fox.
Bob never knew a stranger and enjoyed sharing a story or a joke with anyone he met. He was proud of his WWII service, and for many years he and Ruth enjoyed traveling around the country to his Army reunions. He was thrilled to be able to visit Washington, DC at age 91 as part of Honor Flight and to be an honored Veteran guest a local elementary school. He was a 75 year member of the Hugh L. Bates Lodge #686, a member of the Scottish Rite and Syrian Shrine.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Mason Christian Village, Hockley Chapel, 411 Western Row Rd., Mason, Ohio. Visitation will be Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
