Thomas John
Toerner
August 12, 1929 – May 11, 2022
Toerner, Thomas J. Sr., 92, of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away on
Wednesday, May 11, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Tom was born in
Hamilton, Ohio, on August 12, 1929, to the late Joseph and Magdalene
Toerner.
A 1947 graduate of Hamilton Catholic High School, Tom attended
Xavier University for one year before enlisting in the United States
Army. He served two years of active duty at Fort Dix in New Jersey and
five years in the US Army Reserve. After an honorable discharge in
1950, Tom worked at AMSCO in Cincinnati where he met Mary Romes
and fell in love. The two married in 1952 and made their home in
Hamilton where they raised their family until moving to The Woodlands
in 1982.
Tom worked for 30 years at Nicolet Industries in Hamilton before
joining Johns-Mansville in 1982. He then became a partner in Power
LoneStar, where he was awarded two utility patents for his invention of
Powercrete, a polymer concrete used to coat and insulate pipelines. After
retiring from Power LoneStar in 1994, he became a consultant in the
pipeline industry.
Tom loved his family and found great joy in spending time with his
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved playing cards,
especially pitch and bridge, working on jigsaw puzzles and solving
crossword puzzles. He was a lifelong Reds fan and Xavier men's
basketball fan. He never knew a stranger.
Tom traveled for work and for pleasure, and he and Mary visited all 50
states as well as several countries overseas. He could recall small towns
and highways, and his family liked to joke that he always knew a
shortcut.
Tom was loving, smart, honest and hard-working. All who knew him
will miss his good sense of humor, integrity, generosity and kindness.
Tom is survived by his children Jane (Lawrence) Toerner-Brown,
Martha (Michael) Lopinto, Elizabeth (Donald) Tassone, Thomas
(Pamela) Toerner, Jr, Terri (Thomas) Barbush and Edward (Theresa)
