Obituary

PORTER, William John Jr, age 79, of Fairfield, Ohio died at Hospice of Hamilton in Hamilton, Ohio of pancreatic cancer on April 20, 2011. John was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 2nd, 1931, the only child of William John Porter, Sr. and Anna Kathryn MacDonald Porter. In 1957, John married Ann Cassidy, and together they raised seven children, his proudest life accomplishment.

John graduated from the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia in 1948. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA, where he was awarded membership to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated in 1952. He later earned a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia in 1955.

John was employed by Baldwin Lima Hamilton (BLH) in Philadelphia and Hamilton, Ohio until 1961. In 1961 he joined Cincinnati Incorporated, a machine tool company based in Harrison, Ohio, retiring as Principal Scientist in 1999. He served as a Trustee for the Cincinnati Incorporated Pension Plan until earlier this year. As a national expert in powdered metal technology, he authored several publications, earned a patent, and served as President of the Powder Metallurgy Equipment Association and of the American Powder Metals Institute. He was awarded the Metal Powder Industries Federation Distinguished Service to PM Award in 1999.

John highly valued education and community service. He was proud to have provided a parochial and private school education to all of his children, and proud to have supported all seven children through college. John was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Fairfield. At Sacred Heart, he was a member and Past President of the Parish Council and of the School Board, a member of the Men's Choir, and an active volunteer into his retirement. John was an early proponent of youth soccer in Fairfield, and was a founding member and coach of SAY soccer. He was a troop leader of Boy Scout troop 967 in Fairfield, and he volunteered at the Lane Public Library of Fairfield. He was a member of Fairfield Optimist Club, Hamilton Elks # 93, and the Knights of Columbus.

In his retirement, he delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, taking long driving trips with his wife, grocery shopping at Jungle Jims in Fairfield, and playing bridge several times a week.

He is survived by Ann Cassidy Porter, his wife of over 53 years; his seven children: William John Porter III (Lorraine) of Dayton, Ohio, James Bernard Porter (fiancé Laura Corrill) of Franklin, Ohio, Barbara Ann Porter (Douglas Brophy) of New York, New York, Beth Porter Quantz (William) of Charleston, South Carolina, Kathryn Porter Boeschenstein (Curt) of Pleasanton, California, Jeffrey Michael Porter (Marcie) of Durham, North Carolina, and Margaret Porter de Movellan (Anthony) of Lexington, Kentucky, and his twelve beloved grandchildren: John, Cameron, Breanna, Hannah, Antonio, Porter, Cyrus, E.J., Anna Kate, Lucy, Eliza, and Addie.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 11 AM, at Sacred Heart Church, 400 Nilles Rd, Fairfield, OH. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10-11 AM before the Mass.
